Vintage Story Desert Life Ep 68: A Grand Adventure In Our New Meteoric Iron Plate Armor
Vintage Story Desert Life is a desert-themed survival playthough in version 1.19, with a large list of mods to speed up the process of building and chiseling. While our builds will all (or at least mostly) be in the desert, we are not restricted to hot and arid climates for the purposes of gathering materials and resources.
This series exists as a series of VODs, as well, but for people who prefer their videos in a more manageable length, the VODs will be cut into these shorter episodes and released throughout the week after each livestream, provided that there is enough desire for this format.
Want to play along? You'll need the world files and all of these mods (likely) in order for it to...

    Good thing about the Golden Combs beehives is that you can have a lot of honey/wax being made in one spot instead of needing a field os skeps. Of course its heavy on materials to start but later on you get a lot more for less work. And another thing, I saw some pictures from Tyron and he is bringing his view of the beehive klin to the game too, looks cool with the interior shelves for lots of stuff to fire at once.

    I agree, that tree seed mod used before (also the one i still use) does give you a massive surplus of certain tree types, but then again when you step back and think about it it really does make sense. Like Pine and Oak dropping a TON of Pinecones and Acorns is kind of realistic, much more so than MAYBE 2 or 3 per tree like in Vanilla VS. Then the real problem becomes the fact that there are zero uses for the common "tree seed" types. If we had a way to process acorns into flour or Pinecones into Pine Nuts that could be toasted and again a way to process it into flour. Some basic food recipes to go along with the flours/doughs/breads like acorn pancakes or "puddings"(european cakes) would be fantastic as there would actually be a use for the abundance of such resources. All of this would fit in fantastically with Primitive Survival as the stuff mentioned are primitive recipes, if only P.S. added the tree seed increases and the recipes.

    Yah know I just had a thought... why can't we carve wooden bowls? Like maybe the negative added to balance out how early and easily you could make a bowl would be to make them deteriorate after either X number of uses and oil lamps couldn't be made with Wooden Bowls. I mean come kn we can make a Wooden Pan, a large plate that could totally hold a bunch of food, but noooo thats for panning dirts and sands... >_>

    • @SnyperMK2000JclL
      @SnyperMK2000JclL 18 часов назад

      It would be pretty awesome if we could make "silverware", like forks and spoons as well as the basic knife, maybe some clay and silver plates to create "Table Settings", whether or not they could be used for eating food isn't important though it would be cool especially if it gave some bonus that a simple bowl doesnt. More stuff like this would be amazing for decoration purposes, like the "Pan Era" restaurant would totally benefit from some table setting and other interior table top decor. Kinda like those candle stubs he left floating in that 2nd ruin, those would make fantastic center pieces for the occasional table.

    Seeing this ruin generated with nothing around it shows me how much of mine got buried by the bamboo forest it sits on. I had to cut a path around the edge just to find all the entrances. Also I think the lag you are experiencing is from the ruin, mine does it too. There’s just a lot going on in there I guess. Sadly, the thyme and lavender don’t seem to go in the pots, I tried and the game said no. Which is a shame because they’re quite pretty.

      Haha, I hope I didn't come off as TOO frustrated. It really is an *interesting* mod. I think it would be a GREAT mod if they changed two things: one, don't force the use of a backpack slot; and two, making the frames interaction less fiddly; maybe just right-clicking on the frame box should remove them sequentially, and crouch-right-clicking should add. Scrape with a knife in the inventory, rather than in a dedicated frame rack.

    *to the person who was live in stream and said that smithing hurts their eyes. Go into the setting, there's an option slider that thins or thickens the Voxel Grid when smithing/clayforming. Crank that slider up a good 20-30% from its default and you'll get much thicker and easier to see lines on the Voxel Grid, which is very helpful for those with poorer eyesight or help prevent strain after long sessions.

    Personally, I wish you would give From Golden Combs a chance. I also wish it weren’t so weird with controls, having to place things in such a manner, and being able put them in the regular inventory (a problem I hate with the general games packs and mods like butchery). The ceramic pots are so much better for me that the constant build/rebuild and loss of hives from skeps in early game, and I kind of like having something to do in the game other than planting and forging/mining.

    • @Kurazarrh
      @Kurazarrh 2 дня назад

      I mean... I am giving From Golden Combs a chance, just that I'm giving my thoughts about the experience in real-time. I think it's a really NEAT mod, but I don't know yet if I really LIKE it. I'm somewhat predisposed to disliking things that are fiddly or that require a lot of effort without a commensurate increase in efficiency or efficacy. From what I see with FGC so far, the Langstroth hives seem to be best for people who only want to check their bees every couple months, or if you have limited space for bees.

    • @Bromon655
      @Bromon655 2 дня назад

      I agree about the ceramic hives. Harvesting and rebuilding skeps is one of the most tedious aspects of the game for me. Skeps are primitive and should be an early-game item only.

      @@Kurazarrh That is fair. You did go through the motions. I got the impression that you weren’t looking forward to it when it was talked about episodes ago. When I watched this, it felt so much like you were being forced to review something you didn’t enjoy. To me, it’s a filler for something to do that does provide an up front trade off of resources and time to produce a bit more later (I don’t know the numbers, so I could be off). When I say “give it a chance”, it’s not necessarily I’m saying that you didn’t try. I’m saying it might be something to come back to again and maybe it could grow on you. It’s totally your choice, or course/obviously. Don’t go changing things based on some dumb comment on YT.

    This video perfectly illustrates something I've come to realize after 60+ hours in VS: a key part of the game loop is looking/walking away from the game. I often have a book beside me so I can read while I wait out the night or a temporal storm. I don't know if this is intentional and I don't know if I like it or not. I'm still playing and enjoying VS, so I definitely don't hate it.

    • @Kurazarrh
      @Kurazarrh 2 дня назад

      I find that most of the time, there's ALWAYS something to do. When I'm waiting for 20 ingots' worth of ore to smelt in a crucible, that's like 8 minutes of time I can spend catching up on other things in-game: meal prep, milking the sheep/goats, feeding the chickens, harvesting or replanting crops, and so on (or staying near the crucible and forging more tools or plates!). The only time I generally have nothing else to do is panning lots of blocks at once. Then I'll mentally check out and just watch TV while I pan. If you haven't seen the Desert Life series I'm doing now, you could check that out and see what I've started doing during temporal storms. They've become a lot more exciting and interesting now that I've changed tactics!

    Bit of a strange question I know, but how did you find the transition from QWERTY to Dvorak? (assuming you started with qwerty like most of us did) I've been considering trying it out myself but it looks a little intimidating! Thanks for the great VS content.

    • @Kurazarrh
      @Kurazarrh 4 дня назад

      I did start on QWERTY, and the reason I switched was because my left hand was starting to feel the strain (that layout is very heavy on the left hand). Anyway, at the time I switched, I was doing a lot of writing, as well as transcribing some old notes and stories I had written on paper in order to have a digital copy. I went absolutely cold-turkey. Switched all my computers to Dvorak and didn't allow myself to fall back on QWERTY. It took about 2 weeks before I was mostly able to type without looking at my hands again; 4 weeks until I was back up to my original typing speed, and by 6-8 weeks, I was actually typing faster than I ever had on QWERTY. So I absolutely recommend it, especially if you're having any hand/finger/wrist strain, arthritis, or carpal tunnel. Also it's great for really annoying everyone else who tries to use your computer! ;)

    Why not fire both SRMs on your TT brawler at once? Even if not linked, switching between the two rapidly would double your burst DPS with them. I've seen a couple situations in the past few battles where that little bit of extra punch would have helped a lot. Also, on your LP brawler, you might want to switch the SRMs to autofire if you arent going to manually control them. That way they can act as PD to shoot down fighters and give chip damage to shields and unshielded ships. Really enjoying the series so far!

    • @Kurazarrh

      You'll find with missiles, I tend to use them somewhat conservatively. XD In any game with limited resources, I tend to hoard them until I HAVE to use them, unless it's "limited" resource with a large pool. As for autofire on the SRMs, I find that they pretty much just always shoot as soon as they're in range (which IS what autofire does, but still), so they end up often on cooldown when I need them for PD duty. =/

    Do the tannin barrels go bad? Or could you have some ready on standby?

    • @Kurazarrh
      @Kurazarrh 4 дня назад

      Nope, tannin never goes bad, so I could definitely have some on standby. I don't recall what the situation was at the time, but if I didn't have a ton of oak logs, I may not have wanted to use them all on tannin!

    Watching you make the Langstroth Hives of the From Golden Combs mod and I definitely think I'll just plop down a chest nearby and fill it with all the stuff I need to make the hives. I'm with you on the "It has to go into the backpack slot???!!!!" Aaagh! I think if the hive pot/Langstroth breeder box has bees in it, it's "filled" and only then should it require being placed into the backpack slot.

      @Kurazarrh 4 дня назад

      Yeah, I'd have a lot less of an issue with the backpack slot bit if I wasn't just going to plop the box down next to where I'm working. As it stands, it just makes it more fiddly.

    I was looking through the mods list... there is totally a "visible terra preta" like mod for Meteorites... xD just an idea but it might be useful to quickly recheck some of those known spots for more buried deeper.

      I really think some Suevite blocks would look great on the ceiling or upper walls of a "Sun Temple". It would definitely be a great excuse to go back and get some Suevite and ensure you also got all the meteoric iron from those spots. Might only find a few extra blocks, but it would help with repairing the White Knight armor.

    Can you do tempest only swarm for maximum beehiveception ?

    • @Kurazarrh
      @Kurazarrh 5 дней назад

      Tempests are kind of funny in that regard. They're excellent ships in the early to mid-game, but they fall off HARD in the late game. You can extend their lifespan by building them for capacity and defense, but then you lose out on their strike capabilities. I think one of the weaknesses of the Tempest is that the AI is way too liberal in dumping their Terminator Drones into the enemy at the first chance they get. Which is a shame because the drones do three huge things: 1) they are a source of flux-less IR pulse lasers; 2) they are a source of flux-free PD lasers; 3) they can armor tank for the Tempest. AI pilots like to just turn them into so-so missiles and slam them into enemy shields as soon as they can. If Tempest pilot AI was adjusted to only dump the drones when enemy shields were overloaded, I think they'd be a lot more useful into the late-game. As a player ship, the can hold up okay into the late game, but again, you have to (re)build for defense over offense.

    Awe, "Meteorite" labels and not "Meaty Ore"... xD Also you should dig down around the center of the impact sites and around the edges a bit. I have found that many of the Meteorites are in 2 clumps, one usually smaller fracture clumo up at the surface and another clump slightly below. Ages ago i had commented that i was mad that you were getting like 6-12 ore blocks per meteorite site where i was lucky if i was getting 3 to 5 ore blocks. I went back like a week later and dug out the suavite and found even more ore blocks just a bit deeper/off to the side of the small cluster i had found previously.

    I think it would be really cool if you added some slate or other very dark stone to represent "metal slag" around the anvil of the Helve Hammer setup. As if it was a bunch of soot, slag and scrap chips from the smithing process scattered all around the anvil and maybe some densely covered areas nearer the helve hammer rigs and less in the opening you walk into, as if you did a ton of smithing but your repeated walking has cleared a path through the debris.

      That could be a fun detail! I should probably think about replacing the floor with stone first, since a wood floor might be a bit too flammable!

    Quick kuestion, have you ever considered doing a valheim playthrough? Not sure if it’s your style or not but I’ve recently been addicted to it and you’re one of my favorite creators :)

      I did do a Valheim LP! I didn't take it all the way through the game, though, because Valheim got more and more grindy, which was getting in the way of me completing the Vintage Story Guide episodes. But here's a link to the playlist: ruclips.net/p/PL_m19gCRJ121cMWgirQmECVNXAFI0JOEP
